What is a Lactation Consultant?

Lactation Consultants are responsible forconsult identifying and correcting lactation problems, and specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding.  In addition to one-on-one consulting, Lactation Consultants often plan and lead breastfeeding classes for expectant families.

As a Lactation Consultant, you will be working closely with other healthcare professionals and may advise physicians, midwives, and other healthcare providers on lactation problems experienced by your clients. You will also be an advocate, providing education on breastfeeding topics to other healthcare professionals.

Lactation Consultants work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and in private practice.

Professional Certification and Licensing

Graduates of Birthingway’s Lactation Consultation Program have sufficient classroom and clinical experience to sit for the certifying examination to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Currently,  licensing is not required to practice as a Lactation Consultant in Oregon, although specific employers may require additional credentials for employment.
