Academic Advising
Birthingway’s Student Affairs Coordinator is available to assist students in coordinating their course load and apprenticeships, to help plan their academic path to best meet their goals, and to provide other aid and advice needed to assure their completion of the program.
Career Planning and Job Placement
Because the vast majority of our graduates are self-employed, Birthingway does not offer job placement services at this time. The College does offer a course that covers career and business aspects of midwifery practice called “Running a Midwifery Practice.” A student’s advisor can assist with career planning; however, the College does not have any dedicated professional career services staff.
Clinical Placement
Birthingway offers assistance in finding clinical placement. Please contact the Faculty Coordinator.
Computer / Internet Use
There are two computers available for student use in the College library during regular library hours. Students may write essays, do internet research, and use other installed programs. Students are not permitted to install new programs, change computer settings, or alter equipment connections. If you need help with the student computer, please ask library staff. Printouts are 25 cents per page.
Copy Machine
There is a copy machine for student use in the College library. It is available during library hours, and cost is 10 cents per page.
Health Insurance/Health Services
Students at Birthingway are responsible for their own medical coverage; this is not included in student fees. Birthingway does not offer any medical or health services, professional counseling, therapy, or testing either on or off campus.
Housing
Birthingway does not provide housing for students, nor does it endorse any housing at this time.
Student Directory
Student information (name, phone number, email address) is put into a Student Directory and given to matriculated students and faculty members. Birthingway does not indiscriminately distribute private information to the general public, but student, graduate and alumni directory information may be provided to community members such as local midwives, school alumni, or our accreditors. Students have the right to decline inclusion in the Student Directory or release of directory information to the public by indicating privacy preference in the space provided on the registration form for each term. Students who choose “Protected Privacy” will not be listed on the Student Directory, and not publicly acknowledged as a student of Birthingway to any outside inquiry.
Student ID Cards
Identification cards are provided to all incoming students at no charge. Pictures taken at the Meet and Greet are used and cards are distributed after being signed at New Student Orientation. If a picture is not available from the Meet & Greet, a picture will be taken at Orientation. Renewal stickers are provided for each term a student registers.
Transportation
Birthingway does not provide transportation assistance to the College or to clinical settings. Portland has an excellent public transportation system – one bus stop is located in front of the College and another one block to the east.
Tutoring
Students requiring tutoring should contact the Student Affairs Coordinator for assistance in locating a qualified tutor. It is then up to the student and tutor to decide on meetings, materials, and any compensation.
