Catalogue 07-08: Student Records
Please note that this is the March 2007 version of the 2007-2008 Catalogue. Information within is accurate as of this date. Subject to change without notice.
Student records are confidential. Generally, records will only be released with written permission of the student. Students or parents of a dependent student may review the student’s academic records at any time. Simply make an appointment with the Student Affairs Coordinator. For parent review, the student must be a dependent for tax purposes. Documentation is required prior to review.
To correct student records, a student must submit a challenge in writing to the registrar with sufficient original documentation to support any change. The challenge must be approved by the Student Affairs Coordinator in consultation with relevant faculty.
In addition, students should be aware that academic records and related information may be shared among faculty, and between faculty and staff, as part of their support of the student’s education. For example, a student’s core instructor may share information on a student’s educationally weak areas with the student’s preceptor, so that the preceptor can focus attention on those areas during the student’s clinical work. All disclosures, including within the institution, will only be made when there’s a legitimate educational interest.
Rights Under FERPA
The privacy of your student records at Birthingway is protected by federal law. Birthingway will not release your private student information except when it is required by regulation (for example, if we are being reviewed by a federal auditor or by our accreditor) or if it’s necessary in order to provide your education or related services (for example, sometimes we may need to work with your prior school to determine your financial aid eligibility).
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their academic records. These rights include:
• The right to inspect and review the student’s academic records within 45 days of the day the College receives a request for access.
• The right to request the amendment of the student’s academic records that the student believes is inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights.
• The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s academic records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.
• The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the College to comply with the requirements of FERPA.
