Student Labor Doulas
Below is the list of Birthingway student labor doulas. If you came straight to this page from a search or another site, you might want to read our Doula FAQ first.
In the practicum portion of our training program, our students offer their services as student labor doulas to pregnant women for free. The purpose of this free service is two-fold. First, it is our hope that pregnant women who could not otherwise afford to employ a doula for their birth will, with this service, be able to have a doula help them as they go through the pregnancy and birth process. Second, it allows labor doula students an avenue in which to acquire the birth experience they need to be certified as labor doulas through Birthingway.
Before you peruse the following list of Student Doulas in search of someone to assist you in your upcoming labor & delivery, please read the following statement:
Birthingway College of Midwifery does not supervise student doulas and is not responsible for their conduct in their role as prenatal, labor, and postpartum support for the expectant mother and/or her supporters. Birthingway makes no claims regarding these students, other than that they have completed the classroom portion of their training. These students are now volunteering or charging low fees for their services in order to complete the number of births required for certification as a labor doula by Birthingway College of Midwifery. The students are not supervised when providing doula services to clients during this practicum period. Therefore, anyone contacting and engaging the services of the student doulas listed below do so voluntarily, and hold harmless Birthingway College of Midwifery for the conduct of these students. If you choose to work with a student doula, you are entering into a relationship with that doula, and not with Birthingway College of Midwifery.

Bio:As a Doula, I am honored to assist in whatever way you feel will best support you and your family prior to, during and after the birth of your new child. I am privileged and humbled to be there for you and your family during the birthing process. My ongoing academic and professional experiences includes continued education classes on childbirth and breastfeeding, working as a Postpartum Doula at an established birthing center, and a student Labor Doula through Birthingway. Throughout my work and academic responsibilities, I maintain an extremely flexible schedule to ensure you will never be without Doula support.
My expertise includes pregnancy and postpartum diet and fitness designed to ease labor and recovery, Reiki healing, meditation and creative expression and relationship coaching (aka baby-proofing your life). If time allows, you will receive two-to-three prenatal visits where we will get to know each other. We can incorporate modalities that you and your family need, such as help with birth plans, birth art and pain coping techniques (massage and touch, positioning, breathing, meditation and visualization, vocalization, aromatherapy, energy techniques).
Postpartum, you will receive one visit, during which we will share your birth story and discuss all the challenges and joys that lay ahead. You will also receive any needed breastfeeding support during this time.

Bio: Through the beautiful births of my two daughters, I have become passionate about helping women and their partners to have positive, satisfying birth experiences. I gave birth to my first daughter while working on my Master of Science degree. After the birth of my second daughter, I began to focus my efforts on becoming a doula. As such, I feel strongly about helping to educate women about their choices in labor and birth and to act as a non-judgmental advocate for the mother in support of her choices. At the same time, I am a strong advocate for mothers desiring a low intervention birth. These births can result in increased feelings of maternal satisfaction with the birthing process and increased well-being for the mother and for the baby by facilitating breastfeeding and family bonding.
Every birth is unique and the needs of a mother and her partner cannot always be predicted beforehand. I will use my knowledge, training, and compassion to help make the labor and birth process the best that it can. My calm demeanor and grounding presence help to create a peaceful environment for birth. I will provide reassurance and offer suggestions and assistance with comfort measures and positional changes to encourage safe and comfortable progression of labor.

Bio: Giving birth can be incredibly empowering and satisfying, an experience a women will remember for the rest of her life. I believe that when women are allowed to feel safe and secure their bodies will do what they were meant to do. No two births are the same; therefore, it is important for every woman and her partner to be informed and educated about all of the options available to them at any given time. I wish to make your birth experience the most fulfilling it can be. I will be involved as much or as little as you need me to be, and help with relaxation techniques, positioning, massage, or even with just a quick sip of water. My purpose is not to replace your partner, but rather work together to help facilitate the very best experience for the both of you. We will meet 2-3 times prenatally and explore any questions you have, and I can help you with your birth plan. Immediately following the birth I will stay with you to help with breastfeeding and help you settle in. We will meet again one or two more times in the following weeks to process your birth experience. I work with a network of doulas to ensure continued and uninterrupted service. My primary backup is Martha Von Reis (see bio on this page) if you desire we can set up a joint prenatal visit. If you have any questions or would like to set up an introductory meeting, please contact me via email or phone. Speaks Russian and Hebrew.

Bio: I was surprised and overwhelmed by the power of birth and how it empowered me at the birth of my first child. I was again empowered by the homebirth of my second child. I found midwifery to be a crucial role in helping women have the birth they want. Only later did I become familiar with doulas and the work they play in making a good birth.
I am entering Birthingway's midwifery course this spring, and look forward to working as a doula and later as a midwife. What I bring to the birthing room: a calm demeanor, comfort and encouragement for the mother, support for the partner and others, facilitation of communication between you and your care providers, breastfeeding support. My daughter was present for my son's birth, which she loved! I will work with you if you want an older child in the room. I will work with you to reach inward for that birthing knowledge which is present in every woman.

Bio: When I was a little girl I wanted to be the President of the United States, a fashion designer, an Olympic speed skater (this was a tough one since I can still barely stand up on ice skates) and an opera singer (they have the best costumes.)Even though the costumes aren't as nice as an Opera star's, and you don't get your own theme song like the President, I want to use my life to help woman have positive birth experiences. I support each mom's right to determine what is right for her, her baby and her family. Through trusting relationships and loving support, each woman can feel good about her birth experience and herself.

Bio: I am the mother of 4 children and have been attending births since 2005. Pregnancy, birth, and early childhood have been passions of mine for years that have led me down various roads of self-study and professional certifications. Along with completing the Birthingway Labor Doula training, I am also a certified Montessori teacher and taught parent-infant and parent education classes in Illinois before moving to Portland. My role as a Doula includes educational resources to help you decide what type of birth experience is right for you and your family. Along with experience, I bring a calm and nurturing personality to the birth room. Doula support would include, depending on time, 1-3 prenatal visits, labor and immediate post-partum support, and 1 post-partum visit in your home. I am also able to offer breastfeeding support if desired.

Bio: I have been passionate about the whole birth process since I was a child. I am comfortable in both home births and hospital births. Previously, I have attended births of friends, family, and by word-of-mouth. While I believe birth is a natural and an empowering process, I will support a mother's choice of how she would like her birth. Helping to facilitate a positive birth experience is what I love, as I assist in being a physical and emotional support for the birthing mother. My demeanor is calm, compassionate and relaxed. I am honored to be a mother of two girls.
