Legend Drugs and Devices

Legend drugs and devices are potentially lifesaving medications and equipment which require special authorization to access. Oregon Licensed Midwives have access to specific legend drugs and devices for professional use. Prior to licensure, a midwife must complete a training in the following required program components:

  • Suturing
  • Pharmacology for Midwives
  • Treatment of Shock including IV
  • GBS prophylaxis antibiotics administration
  • Medications by Injection
  • Neonatal Resuscitation

These trainings must be taken from an approved LD&D education provider. For a full list of approved providers, please click here.

Legend Drugs and Devices Continuing Education

Birthingway now offers online continuing education workshops that meet LD&D education requirements for Oregon State licensure. These workshops are for midwives who have already completed their initial training and are licensed. Neonatal resuscitation training is not part of these workshops and needs to be taken separately. Please visit the Biodynamic Resuscitation of the Newborn (BRN) website for more information.

We offered a five-hour Legend Drugs & Devices Overview Workshop on October 8, 2021. You can purchase access to a recorded version of that workshop here

Initial Training in Legend Drugs and Devices

Birthingway College of Midwifery is an authorized provider of Legend Drugs and Devices education. At this time, Birthingway does not offer the LD&D Initial Training as a stand alone workshop. Rather, Birthingway offers the training through our for-credit classes for students enrolled in our Midwifery Program.

Legend Drugs and Devices Training for Birthingway Midwifery Program Students

Birthingway Midwifery Program students receive training in Legend Drugs and Devices as part of their regular Midwifery Program curriculum. Because of state mandated time-lines, it is not uncommon for students to need to retake some or all LD&D tests and skills demonstrations prior to graduation. Students who are close to completing the Midwifery Program need to talk to the Midwifery Program Coordinator for more information. For Birthingway graduates, transcripts are sent to the Licensing Board upon request.
